K is for ..... #atozchallenge
For whatever reason K was a real challenge for me today. All day as I tried to brainstorm, the only words that I came up with were Knock, Knife, Kite and Knope (as in Leslie from Parks and Rec). As I was helping to motivate the children this evening to complete respective massive school projects both due within the next 48 hours I was lamenting that I had not written my post to which Sidney immediately offered Knowledge. Wow. That is fantastic! However, I am not sure that I can come up with a thoughtful post in whatever time remains of this ever increasingly hectic evening. To which Sid fired back, Kids. Aha! Yes. Kids. Those dear ones that we do everything for in every moment of the day to our last breath. These humans we created that are developing under our tutelage into young adults. They contribute to our joy, angst, frustration, worry and unconditional love. Yes, K is for Kids.

#100HappyDays :: Day 7
I love watching the kids come out of school every day, animated and talking with their friends. It is fun to catch a glimpse of them in their element, navigating through their social circles. It is hard to believe that in only a few short weeks and I will have a high schooler in the house.

Changin' Times and Distractions
Times, they are a changin'. Never a dull moment in our household, always something to shake it up a bit. This week has led to family introspection, and the decision to have the kids change schools next year. A big decision, but one leaving the kids with smiles. The boy child seems to be all set, and eager to meet up once again with his posse of friends. While we have a few options for Miss Sid and high school, she is putting a lot of thought into her application questions for a magnet school that is her first choice, and we will hope those thoughtful answers allow her to shine and nudge her way forward. Fingers crossed!
Trying to figure out the best things for your kids, especially when it involves a shake up, is stressful. It amps up the nervous energy as I get answers for a plethora of questions, acquire the proper paperwork, and hurry up to wait as things begin to fall into place. It seems this is the routine for any big change and during those times I appreciate a good distraction.
If you just want to smile watch this!

A little bit about The Girls Who Drink Whisky
This five ingredient Pot De Creme recipe is as delicious as simple.
An interesting little group of links that I have been collecting this week. Laughter, creative solutions, whisky and chocolate....some of my favorite things!

The Architecture of Life
I am bundled in a sweater this afternoon looking out onto an incredibly grey and blustery day. Life has presented me with many opportunities and seen to it that I have lived a number of very different places. I grew up in Long Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles, and had a wonderful neighborhood upbringing with friends walking to each others homes in a close knit, albeit large community.
I enjoyed big city living as a college student in London, a city that has my heart and if ever I were to live in a big city, that one would be it. From there I got my first taste of the country living in a Midwestern college town called Manhattan, Kansas 'the little apple'. This is where I met B and began to fantasize about that 'little house' life I had romanticized as a child.
As college ended a young couple looking for work and adventure ended up where else? Las Vegas. Here, I learned to love the outdoors in a way that I had not before. There is something magical about sitting on your porch at midnight when it is still 100+ degrees and it feels great...remember it is a dry heat! We had our first real garden where we learned the merits of xeroscape. This wild west town was on the cusp of major growth and we grew with it.
Eight years later, once we were firmly ensconced in adult life, and my stomach swelled with the beginnings of a new adventure, we moved onto opportunities in the upper midwest. Here our little abode has encompassed the best of all worlds; the rural lifestyle that we both had craved yet close to several larger cities.
Last weekend while visiting 'the big apple' I somewhat expected to have the feeling that I had living in London. Though both large bustling cities, they felt vastly different. I saw first hand a population density that created its own vertical architecture. I gazed into buildings on top of buildings for miles at a time and saw floors upon floors of small homes full of vitality. A vastly different life from the one that I know, or have experienced. As I walked the streets I could imagine the early days of the city, almost hearing echoes of those generations past. A very cool, yet surreal experience for this now smallish town girl.
It lead me to think about where we have come from and where we are going. We begin as a clean slate, a foundation and our experiences create our own unique architectures. We build on our experiences to become fully constructed. If we are lucky, we enjoy the ride, and continue to grow and maybe do a little remodeling as we go. As I write this I think of Sid, off on her own first real travel experience alone, a school trip to DC. I wonder what little bricks will be put into place in her foundation this week? At least the boy is contented building his foundation out of Lego's....for the time being. :)

#tbt Butterflies
#tbt circa summer 2005. The year we hatched hundreds of monarchs from a large hanging plant on our front porch.

Thirty Short Hours
This has been a whirlwind weekend. It was our first overnight travel for a soccer tournament and prepping to get out of town at the peak of planting, pruning, transplanting and taking care of baby ducks and chickens inspired quick bursts of productivity in very short segments of time. Yes, there is an annual tournament scheduled for Mother's Day weekend, but I say what better way to spend the day than by being a mom! The tournament itself was great and deserving a post of its own. When we got home this evening with storms approaching and spring heavy in the air we threw open all of the windows, walked the property and marveled at the massive amounts of change that can occur within thirty short hours. We were truly awarded by the first lilac blooms opening outside our kitchen window. A deep breath of gratitude for the spring that seems to have arrived, a beautiful farm to work and an amazing family to share it with. A Happy Mother's Day indeed.

Perceptive Little Devils
Kids say the darnedest things. This week I couldn't stop laughing at the little quips that kept coming out of their mouths. Sidney always tends to be very verbose, where Charles hams up everything he says with a voice or expression (much like his father). After a day or two, I decided to start writing a few of their gems down. Oh! I must do that more often!
Sidney: "Mommy, you know, you're kind of like a rent a clown, if you think about it. People rent you to come to their parties and do Norwex tricks."
Charles: "Mama, mama, wow! Have you ever tried to count your freckles?!" (have no clue where this one came from, completely out of the blue. I think he was trying to get my attention away from something I was working on. It was early morning before school and we were at work. It was at this moment that I began writing things down).
Me: "Charles, you have to do your cover for your poetry project. You know your name and a title and decorate it." Charles: "Mama, I want to put a poem on the front." Me: "Well you already have all of your submissions on the inside." Charles "sheesh, it will be a short one, just a couplet or something." Yup, coming up with that thought, he got his way!
What made you laugh this week? I think I'm going to start keeping regular count, I only got a few actually written down, not always have a scrap at my fingertips to capture the moment. No matter the day, take a moment to really take in what your kids say in conversation. You will be amazed and entertained. Perceptive little devils! Happy Weekend!
